The Punchbowl Stonegate York
The Punchbowl on Stonegate (not to be confused with the Wetherspoon's Punchbowl on Micklegate) is one of the Nicholson's chain "Classic Pubs". Leading down from the Minster, Stonegate has a deep and rich history and the Punchbowl is no exception and is one of York's oldest public houses.
It has great character and a friendly atmosphere and comprises of three rooms. A front bar, an small lounge at the back, and a room in-between which tends to act as a eatery during the day, and hosts live acts on a Friday. The pub has a good, well kept but limited number of real ales.
Punchbowl History
The pub has stood for over four hundred years and was first licensed in 1761. It was known as a meeting place for the Wig Party (Liberals today) who favoured punch, hence the name, where as the Tories had a preference to red wines and port. In them days I guess it was an easy was to find out who to vote for simply on your preference as to what you favoured drink wise.
Haunted
As with many of the old pubs in York, the Punch bowl is host to a couple of ghostly figures. In the past, the pub was renown as a brothel. One story is that one women rejected the advances of a client, who then chased her around the pub to one of the rooms where he strangled her to death.
Her ghostly steps and voice have often been heard by the staff and customers. The second being that of a previous landlord who died during a fire in the pub.
